The meaning of the word "gender" may be less simple than it appears. One commonly-made distinction is that "sex" is biological (though at least to some degree subject to surgical/homonal change or intersex states), but "gender" is a social construct and hence far more malleable. If you would like to learn more about transgenderism and transgender, we recommend the books Sex Changes: The Politics of Transgenderism by Patrick Califia and My Gender Workbook by Kate Bornstein.
